A long weekend in Romania itinerary

EXPLORE BUCHAREST (DAY 1)

Having picked up our hire car, we arrived in Central Bucharest mid-afternoon. The traffic driving into the city was pretty horrific so by the time we settled at our AirBnB, we were ready for a beer!

We headed to the Old Town to explore the quaint streets and busy bars. The area surrounding Strada Selari is teeming with pubs, clubs and everything in between. As it was Halloween, there were plenty of spooky-themed cocktails on special offer so after tasting the local beer, we shared a couple of Mojitos.

Food in Romania is traditionally large, stodgy and/or meaty. Whist we love trying local dishes, for night one we visited the ARTIST restaurant for an exquisite, unique meal.

DRIVE THE transfaragarasan HIGHWAY (DAY 2)

This hair-raising scenic route from Bucharest to Brasov has been named the 'best road in the world' by Top Gear. We were lucky enough to drive it before it closed for the winter!

TRACK BEARS IN THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS (DAY 3)

Although they are still rare, Romania has Europe's great concentration of bears. There are bear hides located in many of the national parks, and a handful of tour companies that offer the chance to track and see bears in the wild.

EXPLORE TRANSYLVANIA (DAY 4)

Steeped in history and with stunning natural beauty, it's easy to spend a whole day driving around Transylvania's villages and countryside.

We've put together a post about what you can see in one day here.

RETURN TO BUCHAREST (DAY 5)

Take the more direct route back to Bucharest, stopping off for lunch and a wander around Peles Castle just outside Sinaiai.
