Five reasons to visit Essaouira

Essaouira, Morocco, @acrosslandsea

We stayed in Essaouira at the end of our time in Morocco, and it was exactly what we needed: perfect weather, delicious food and a lovely atmosphere. Here's just some of the reasons why you should make the trip from Marrakech...

Nº 1 - the medieval streets

Most people recognise Essaouria from Game of Thrones (remember Astapor?). Wandering through the UNESCO World Heritage Site medina's twisting streets is far more interesting than watching it on the TV!

Nº 2 - THE LAID-BACK VIBE

Essaouira is a great place to take things slow, whether that involves an afternoon of peaceful cycling or pottering around the numerous shops that sell spices, painted bowls, music and colourful clothing. The market experience here is 100x more enjoyable than that of Marrakech!

Nº 3 - THE BUSY HARBOUR & FISH MARKET

After we'd seen the local fishermen hard at work, we picked fresh prawns, lobster and fish and had it cooked at one of the many tents in the fish market. Delicious!

Nº 4 - THE ARTY CULTURE

Even the oranges look artistic in this town where live music, pretty artwork and reggae-themed stalls abound.

Nº 5 - THE SCENERY

Whether you prefer the long (breezy) beach, the spattering of rock pools or 18th century architecture, it is all beautiful to look at.

Getting there and where to stay

From Marrakech, we recommend taking a CTM or Supratours bus from the main terminal. It should cost around 80 dirhams including baggage and takes a couple of hours. Both companies run a number of services throughout the day; check their websites for up-to-date information. If you go with Supratours, you won't need to take a taxi if your accommodation is near the medina, as the entrance is a short walk away.

Green Milk is hands down the best budget accommodation option in town: the staff are helpful and friendly, there's a good kitchen, and a sociable vibe. It's not a party hostel - head to Atlantic if that's your thing!
